In 1966, the Ford GT became the first American-manufactured car to win at 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This was huge. Le Mans is one of the premier motor races in the entire world, demanding both speed and endurance from car and drivers. As a newcomer, no one expected Ford to clear house, taking first, second, and third place.
