In a market dominated by crossovers, there's still a lot to be said for the comfort, performance, and convenience of a compact car. The 2018 Ford Focus and the Hyundai Elantra are two of the top vehicles in this class, but there are a few differences that may make one a better choice for your needs.

Drivers in Langhorne, Bensalem, and Philadelphia can learn more about the differences between the 2018 Ford Focus and the Hyundai Elantra with our vehicle comparison.

Performance

The 2018 Ford Focus offers several engine options for a variety of driving styles. There's an efficient 1.0L EcoBoost® I-3 that's great for casual commutes, an energetic 2.0L I-4 that offers a bit more power, and a battery-electric powertrain for better fuel economy. Those looking for sport can find it with the 2.3L EcoBoost®I-4 that pumps out 350 horsepower. Depending on the engine variant, the Focus can be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed manual transmission, or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Similarly, the Hyundai Elantra has a standard 2.0L 4-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder engine, or a high-performance turbocharged 1.6L 4-cylinder engine. Though these lively options pack more power than expected, they can't quite hit the high-performance numbers of the Focus, achieving only a maximum of 201 horsepower. The Focus also has superior driving dynamics and agility, which make it a dream on both winding roads and uneven city streets.

Safety

The 2018 Ford Focus scored well on both federal and independent safety tests for all its models. In addition to its standard airbags and rearview camera, it can also be equipped with a variety of advanced safety features for additional protection. Active park assist, the Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert, the Lane-Keeping System, and the Reverse Sensing System are all optional safety upgrades.

The Hyundai Elantra is a safe choice as well but does not come with the standard rearview camera. Advanced safety technology, such as Lane Departure Warning and a rearview camera, are available for higher trim levels.

Technology

Even at base level, the 2018 Ford Focus has plenty of technology features for an enhanced driving experience. Even the base model comes with Ford's excellent SYNC® infotainment system, which is regarded as one of the best on the market. This system offers crisp graphics, large menu icons, and an intuitive interface, as well as connected features like Bluetooth® and voice recognition. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, HD Radio™, satellite radio, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a 10-speaker Sony sound system are also available.

The Hyundai Elantra comes with a 6-speaker sound system, Bluetooth® connectivity, and not as many standard yet advanced technology features like the Ford Focus. Higher trim levels do get such features as smartphone integration, infotainment, a premium audio system, and additional USB ports, though it doesn't quite match the long list of features for the Focus.
