There are few American rivalries more historic than Ford vs. GM. Both companies have been churning out quality automobiles for over a century. In that time a lot has changed, but one thing has not: their competition to put out the best vehicle in every category of car possible. This is apparent when you compare cars of a similar make, such as the Ford Focus vs. Chevy Cruze. Both vehicles have many great features so it is important to do a side-by-side comparison to truly decide which car is the better purchase.
This review will examine the features available on the stock sedan version of both vehicles for an accurate Ford Focus vs. Chevy Cruze comparison. Interior/Exterior Features
The Chevy Cruze sedan has a slight edge over the Ford Focus in regards to interior features. It comes with Bluetooth, satellite radio and OnStar roadside assistance. By most other metrics these vehicles are more or less comparable vehicles with room for 5 passengers and all-season tires.
Add-ons
The Cruze and the Focus are fairly similar in terms of add-ons. The only major difference is the Cruze ties a lot of features through the OnStar system, including navigation and the airbag-notification system. This can be convenient, but the Focus offers all these features as options providing the customer the ability to tailor these systems to their needs.
Engine Aspects/Mechanical Features
The Ford Focus is the clear winner under the hood. The Ford Focus sedan comes standard with a 2.0L engine capable of generating 146 ft.-lbs. of torque and 160 horsepower at 6500 rotations per minute. The Chevy Cruze, in comparison, comes with a 1.8L engine that can generate 138 horsepower at 6300 rotations per minute. Both engines get similar gas mileage with about 36 mpg on the highway, but the Focus does a bit better in town with 26 mpg compared to the Cruze's 25 mpg.
Warranty
Both vehicles have the same basic warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles. In regards to drivetrain warranty however, the Chevy Cruze is the winner by a hair. It has a 5 year or 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty compared to the Ford Focus's 5 year or 60,000 mile warranty.
Safety
The Ford Focus and the Chevy Cruze are fairly identical in terms of safety features. Both come standard with anti-lock brakes, side and curtain airbags, and traction control.
Price Tag
This is probably the most noteworthy difference between these two vehicles besides their respective engines. Without options, the Ford Focus manufacturer's suggested retail price is $16,350. The Chevy Cruze manufacturer's suggested retail price is $17,270 without options.
In summary, the Ford Focus is clearly the better purchase. What the standard Focus lacks in minor features like OnStar navigation it makes up for in raw engine power and gas mileage. With a more powerful engine and a price tag nearly a grand lighter than the competition, the Ford Focus is clearly the better purchase compared to the Chevy Cruze.
