Section 179 Tax Savings for Ford Work Vehicles

Section 179 Tax Savings for Work Vehicles

Business owners or drivers who use their vehicle for work purposes will want to take a closer look at the Section 179 tax deductions available for commercial vehicles. These tax benefits allow you to deduct the full amount of any new work vehicle or piece of equipment from your taxes, letting you receive a more significant amount of tax savings. We recommend business owners throughout Langhorne, Bristol, and beyond take a closer look at how they can take advantage of the Section 179 tax deduction.

What is the Section 179 Tax Deduction?

Created by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), the Section 179 tax deduction is designed to help incentivize businesses to invest in their business by buying the vehicles and equipment they need. This new way of deducting your vehicle purchases lets you get one lump sum instead of smaller amounts over several years. In turn, the IRS is hoping that businesses will be encouraged to keep reinvesting in themselves, using the money back to add resources, improve operations, or expand.

Does Your Work Truck Qualify for the Section 179 Tax Deduction?

Of course, the Section 179 tax deduction does come with qualifications and limitations. These include:

  • Qualifying Businesses - You must use the vehicle you purchased for business purposes for more than 50 percent of the time. Some examples of qualifying businesses are healthcare, construction, electricians, plumbers, delivery services, agriculture, and more.
  • Qualifying Assets - Property must be placed in service by the end of your tax year. Must be used more than 50% for business use and cannot create a loss. Section 179 is limited by your business's taxable income.
  • SUV Limitation: $32,000 for certain sport utility vehicles. Passenger cars and many light trucks/vans are also subject to the IRS "luxury auto" depreciation limits.
  • Deduction Limits - $2,560,000 for tax years beginning in 2026.
  • Phase-out Threshold - $4,090,000 (deduction reduces dollar-for-dollar above this amount).
  • Bonus Depreciation - May also be available after Section 179 is applied. No overall dollar limit. Generally 100% for qualified property that was acquired and placed in service after Jan 19, 2025. These rules will vary by property type and elections.
*This is general information only. Confirm eligibility, timing, and any business-income limitations with your tax professional.
